Washing machines come in two styles: free-standing and integrated. Almost all washing machines were free-standing twenty-five years ago, meaning they sat on the floor directly. But recently integrated machines have seen a leap in sales. Integrated machines are fitted into the room's units, so the washing machine's exterior is hidden, making the room look modern and tidy. Almost all washing machines are 60 centimetres (24'') wide. American-style washing machines are the notable exception, which can measure up to 80 centimetres (32''). American-style machines have a larger volume and are sometimes top-loaders. In the UK front-loading washing machines are ubiquitous; front-loaders have the washer-door in the front, and top-loaders have the door on top. Front-loaders have the benefit of fitting snugly under the work-surface without obstructing the washer-door. If short on space, consider a washer-dryer. A washer-dryer not only washes clothes, but dries clothes too. A single washer-dryer takes up less space and usually costs less than buying a washing machine and tumble dryer separately.
When buying a washing machine consider the machine's capacity. Capacity is the amount of dirty washing a machine can wash in a single cycle. Over the last 10 years we've seen the average capacity increase from around 4.5kg (10lb) to around 6kg (13lb). When buying a machine, err on the side of caution. It's generally thought that 6kg is adequate for a small family.
In the UK all washing machines display a EU Energy Label. The EU grades machines not only on energy consumption but on washing performance and spin drying performance too. These criteria are graded on an A to G scale, with A being the best, making AAA a perfect score. An AAA washing machine will cost less money to run and will do a better job at washing clothes.
Reputable washing machine manufacturers include Hotpoint, Bosch, Zanussi, Hoover, Whirlpool, Miele, Lg, Indesit, Siemens, Maytag, and Candy.
